via Raspberry Pi Pod

This is a bit complicated, technically, but I’ve been asked to document the issue just in case someone comes across it.

I was getting I2C read errors when using the new TE AmbiMate MS4 sensor board (review coming soon!) with the Raspberry Pi 4. I contacted TE about it and they asked me to try a Pi 3. So I did, and it worked absolutely fine.

It was an intermittent issue on the Pi 4 (everyone’s favourite sort of error!), and so I did some research and found some information on something called ‘clock stretching‘.

Here’s a great voice control media station project from Sid via hackster.io:

This is not your typical Kodi based media player implemented using Pi. This features voice control and built-in Google Assistant. The Kodi is invoked by wakeword “Kodi” (if you want some other wakeword, of course you can change) and the Google Assistant with the usual “Hey Google” and “Ok Google” wakeword. Commands issued with “Kodi” wakeword is processed for Kodi control and “Hey Google” or “Ok Google” wakeword is processed for queries.

RaspberryPi.org is having a multi-day celebration of Pong. Ebon Upton revealed his Python-based take on the classic game, a version he calls Boin! Now they’ve got a fun project that allows you to play Boing! with ultrasonic sensors to make the game even more fun! From RaspberryPi.org:

Games controllers are basically just sensors that take input from the real world in some way and translate that into in-game actions. Most commonly, these sensors are buttons that you press, but there’s no need for that to be the case. You can use almost any sensor you can get input from – it sounds trite, but the main limitation really is your imagination!

We were playing with ultrasonic distance sensors in the last issue of HackSpace magazine, and this sprung to mind a Pong controller. After all, distance sensors measure in one dimension and Pong bats travel in one dimension.

Handy new blog post up on Ben’s Place.

After my post about using a Raspberry Pi 4 as a USB gadget got linked to by a YouTuber who worked your it also worked with the iPad Pro it has been getting a lot of traffic.

Along with the traffic came a number of comments from people wanting help setting things up. While the instructions are reasonably complete, they do assume a certain amount of existing knowledge and access to a monitor/keyboard/network to complete everything. Also given the majority of the readers were Apple users they couldn’t mount the main partition of the SDCard as it is a ext4 file system.

Fun little project I finished up last night.

1. Raspberry Pi 3
2. 3.5″ LCD screen
3. Old mini TV I got for free from a local “Buy Nothing” group.
4. Fake moss & plants from a local craft store.

Instructions:

1. Fresh install of Raspbian 10 (buster) on the Pi, attach screen and config
2. Installed PiWeatherRock, small Python program that provides the GUI
3. Signed up for DarkSky.net, which allows 1,000 free daily API calls to the weather service
4. Added my API key and location into the config file
5. Mounted the Pi & screen inside the TV shell.
6. Decorate! Still in progress, might make it even more overgrown.

Today we celebrate Marie Blair, an artist, animator, and designer. She drove the design for Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, Cinderella, and more. Blair’s unique approach is central to many aspects of Disney parks, including the innovative and influential color palette and neo-Art Deco design of It’s a Small World.

From the Christian Science Monitor:

“[Mary Blair’s] vibrant colors and stylized designs pervade Disney animated films from 1943 to 1953,” writes Mr. Canemaker. “Beneath her deceptively simple style, lies enormous visual sophistication and craftsmanship in everything from color choices to composition.”

Disney had a stable of amazing artists, “but where Mary Blair was unique was that the work that she did here at the studio was not only beautiful work, what she did went beyond the project into a pure art form,” says Michael Giaimo, art director on Disney’s “Pocahontas,” in an interview with the L.A. Times last week. “It became art. It became a statement unto itself.”

“Her most distinctive factor is that she is kind of showing us her soul,” Mr. Giaimo added. “It is not just slick commercial art, it is the combination of commercial and the personal in the artistic sense. She puts herself into her art work and it transcends the greatest of the Disney movies.”

These I print in TPU. I stretch out the hole for the balance lead a little bit with a needlenose pliers for a nice snug fit. The 4s was designed to fit most 4s 1300-1500mah lipo batteries and the 3s was designed for 3s 525mah batteries.

This cartridge case is designed to fit revision 1 of the Kung Fu Flash cartridge for the Commodore 64.

For the included “key caps” to fit, use tactile switches with a height of 5 mm. The right most cap shown in the photos was printed using transparent filament. This allows it to act as an optical fiber for the internal LED on the circuit board.

A 3×16 mm self-tapping screw is required to connect both halves of the case.

added 2 fasteners to the bottom half of the shell to keep it tight

added another hole for a zip tie for the heater and thermistor

modified to fit JST SYP connectors to pass the front fan electrical through and not have to deal with hanging parts and wires, these are the connectors I used:
